Tucked away in the heart of Thomasville's celebrated downtown historic district may be one of the South's best-kept secrets in architectural millwork and quality building products. In 1858, the tradition of creating beautiful, well-crafted fine woodwork began at the Thomasville Variety Works. Monsel Bracey continued that tradition when he acquired the business in 1932 and changed its name to Bracey Lumber Company. The 25,000 square foot building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Reflecting the expanded and updated nature of the business for the new millennium, president John Bracey, Jr. refers to the business simply as Bracey's in order to link the best of the past with innovative new products, services and ideas for the future.For three generations, the foundation of Bracey's has been built on a firm commitment to the core values of quality and integrity. The materials and workmanship of their custom mouldings, flooring and woodwork have received nationwide accolades, from the White House and State Department in Washington, D.C. to the fine homes of Sea Island and Savannah, Georgia. As shown in the accompanying photograph of the Woodhaven Plantation home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Loudermilk, one of the most amazing sights to see in their shop is the construction of a graceful, sweeping, circular staircase that will then be dismantled and carefully reconstructed piece by piece at the construction site. Known for their work in "hard to find" lumber such as old heart pine, Bracey's has vast resources for finding just the right woods, veneers and hardware to make each customer's project unique and special.Bracey's reputation for integrity is well known throughout the Southeast.
